What Baby’s Eating: 6 to 7 months old

The 6 to 7 month window is a fun (and messy) time for feeding babies as they are usually beginning to grab the spoon and become more involved in the feeding process. It is also the month when many babies get their first tooth and mealtimes can be a great opportunity for teething.
With both of my kids, I waited until their second month on solids to introduce green vegetables. I wanted them to get used to the act of eating and enjoying milder, sweeter foods before introducing vegetables with a stronger taste. When I did finally introduce green vegetables, I usually mixed them with a sweeter food at first. Baby spinach is a great green vegetable to introduce early on because it is so packed with nutrients but has a softer texture and milder flavor than regular spinach. It is easy to incorporate some leaves of steamed baby spinach into almost any puree, but I usually start with something familiar to my kids. Green applesauce is really my go-to green vegetable puree during this month. Apples seem to make anything palatable to a 6 month old, plus they have the benefit of being cheap and are a fruit that we almost always have on hand. The kiwi puree makes this a very soft, even liquid baby food so it is great for young babies or as a base to add baby cereal for a thicker puree.

My son is also loving sweet potatoes this month! Sweet potatoes are the perfect baby food since they are sweet, nutritious and extremely easy to prepare. Pureed sweet potato has a very thick texture, so I usually add some water when I blend it up and also thin it out further with some formula before feeding it to baby.
Ingredients
As I mentioned last month, my baby loves avocado and I’ve been trying to think of other vegetables to mix with it so he doesn’t get so used to eating bananas all the time! Surprisingly, cucumbers were a big hit. I love cucumbers but never really thought of them as a baby food. But adding them to avocado makes a nice smooth puree and the mild flavor really appealed to my son.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cucumber, peeled, seeded and cut in small chunks
- 1/2 avocado, flesh scooped out
- 1. Combine the cucumber and avocado in a blender, food processor or baby food makes and blend until smooth. A little water, formula or breast milk may need to be added to make a perfectly smooth puree.
